Mrs. Sarah J. Russell, lifelong citizen of Laclede County who died recently in Wallace hospital at the age of 83 years and 9 months, had been one of the county's most useful women.
It is said of her: Mrs. Russell lived a life of unselfish devotion and service to her husband, her family and to people in communities where her husband, Rev. J. A. Russell, served as pastor.
Sarah Josephine Goans, daughter of early day settlers in White Oak Pond community, was born March 20, 1864, and spent her childhood and young womanhood there. Her parents were the late Andrew and Mary Goans.
She was united in marriage Feb. 16, 1892 to Rev. J. A. Russell, one of the best known pioneer ministers of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in southwestern Missouri. They were parents of three children: Aubrey Russell, Competition; Mrs. Mary Younger, Nashville, Tenn.; and Mrs. Fae Randolph, Van Buren, Mo. She reared from infancy a step-daughter, Mrs. Tina Wynn of Hartville. All attended the funeral. She also leaves two brothers, Alonzo and Charles Goans, both of Lebanon, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Rev. and Mrs. Russell lived at Hartville for many years but in 1922 moved to Phillipsburg where they lived until 1942 when they came to Lebanon to reside. Mr. Russell died 2 1/4 years before his wife.
It is said: Proverbs 31:10: "Who can find a virtuous woman? Her price is above Rubies; the heart of her husband does safely trust in her" could have been especially written for her.
