Rickey Davis was born in Tunica, Miss., being the first baby born in the new Tunica County Hospital. He was the son of Beulah Jordan Davis Stewart and Otis Jefferson Davis.
Rickey moved with his family to Caruthersville in 1953. All 12 of his grade school and high school education years were in the Caruthersville school system. He proudly graduated from Caruthersville High School with the class of 1969. Growing up in Caruthersville was a great adventure for Rickey. He had an older brother, Larry, and because of that he developed his sports skills quickly. He started playing minor league ball at age 8. He struck out most of the batters, and then, when he came to bat, it was home run time. The next year, the league had him move up to Little League ball even though he was not old enough.
During high school, Rickey excelled in football, baseball, golf and basketball. In 1968, as a senior, because of his outstanding ability as a football running back, he was the Big Eight Conference scoring champion. After high school graduation, he attended Arkansas State University, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
Rickey moved to Tulsa, Okla., where he became a successful manager of an equipment company. Living in the Tulsa area for about 10 years, he enjoyed golfing and socializing with family and friends. He moved back to Caruthersville in 1987. He then began working for Ark/Mo Power, now known as Ameren Missouri, as a customer service advisor. He had been working for the past 26 years in this field.
On November 25, 1989, Rickey was united in marriage to Ginger Coppage at the First Presbyterian Church in Caruthersville by Dr. Paul Currie. In the years that followed they made Caruthersville their home, contributing selflessly to the community and surrounding area.
Rickey has been a very important member of the Caruthersville community. He had just begun his four-year term as mayor and was especially excited about this term because of plans to retire from his present job and devote his full attention to his beloved Caruthersville. He had served in the position of mayor from 1994 through 1998. During his first term, he was very instrumental in getting Casino Aztar located here. It was also during this term that the Caruthersville Sports Complex was constructed, which thrilled Rick because he wanted every child to have the opportunity to play baseball. He was a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. He had served as president of the local Rotary Club. Rickey and Ginger were very instrumental in getting the Caruthersville Humane Society started. They were known for always having a German shepard dog. ....
Rickey and Ginger loved to travel. ......
Rick was preceded in death by his first wife, Cathy McNeeley Davis, mother of Chris Davis; his father Otis Jefferson Davis,; and his stepfather, Charles Stewart.
Rickey is survived by his wife, Ginger Davis of Caruthersville; his mother, Beulah Stewart of Caruthersville; a son and daughter-in-law Chris Davis and Vanessa Wilburn of Austin, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Beverly Davis of Houston, Texas; two nephews, Scott Davis and his wife, Amy, and Nelson Davis; and two very special grandnephews, Noah and Cody Davis. He is also survived by other family members and many, many friends from all walks of life.
