John was born 1768 and died 1823. He was the son of James Sanders and Lucy Utley.
He married three times.
First: Margaret (1770-1799 died in childbirth) m. July 10, 1788
F/o: Hiram, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Rachel
Second to Esther Griffin(1781-1815) m. 1800
F/O Susan, Enoch, John, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth.
Third: He married Zana Lazzell in 1821 and they had twins Thomas and William.
John Sanders was a Rev. War Vet. And after the war was a tax collector during the Whiskey Rebellion. Buried near him is his second wife's mother, Mary Ries Griffith and her husband Samuel Griffith. John had been visiting his second wife's mother when he took ill and died. This is why he's buried in Bryn Zion Cemetery.
John Sanders enlisted in Rev. War 10 July 1802 with Isaac Griffin's Militia.According to DAR: "John Sanders served in Capt. McClement's Company, McNeill's Delaware Regiment. He received a one time pension for his services of 13 pounds and 10 shillings. No date of discharge has been found. However the Secretary of State, Dover, Delaware says that John Sanders was mustered into service as a soldier in the Rev. War 10 July 1780 at Philadelphia, PA, Second Delaware REgiment, under col. Henry McNeill."
