BROOKFIELD
Allen R. Abe Cowen, 76, of Academy Street, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at St. Elizabeths Medical Center. He was born on September 24, 1937, the son of the late Edward and Eudora Jennings Cowen. Abe graduated with the Class of 1955 from Brookfield Central School. On August 2, 1958, at the Leonardsville United Methodist Church, he married Mary Elizabeth Robinson. Abe spent his working career as a Labor Foreman for O.W. Hubbell and Sons in Utica. He retired in 1999, due to illness, with 38 years of service to the company and was a proud member of Laborers International Union of North America Local No. 35 for over 50 years. He was a past member of the Brookfield Couples Bowling League, the Brookfield Fire Department and the Beaver Valley Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He respected and appreciated wildlife, enjoyed good food, and relished the friendships he made throughout his life. From a young age, he was passionate about baseball, growing into an avid New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed attending local stock car races. Once retired, he devoted much of his time tending to the grounds of the Brookfield Town Park and mowing the ball fields, enabling local youth to share in his favorite pastime. Abe is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Nannette Cowen, of Brookfield; daughter, Shelley Cowen, of Pilot Point, Texas; son, Tim Cowen (Chris), of Holland Patent; a brother and sister in-law, Gerald and Carol Cowen, of Brookfield; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Crystal Cowen, also of Brookfield; and sister-in-law, Hazel and Jerry Burch. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, John Robinson, and leaves behind Sharon Robinson. One of his biggest joys was his beloved grandchildren: Trisha (Hayley), Matthew (Heather), Katelyn (Wade), Nicole (Michael and new great-granddaughter, Sophia), and granddaughter, Brianna (Joe). Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at 3 PM, at the Paul Funeral Home of Brookfield. Interment will be in Brookfield Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 1-3 PM, prior to the service. In memory of Abe, kindly consider donations to the Brookfield Town Park Fund via the Town Clerk, PO Box 83, Brookfield, NY 13314.
