Orphaned at the age of 4, he was apprentised to learn the trade of bookbinder. He was proprietor of the "Charleston Daily Advertiser" and a weekly publication "The Rose Bud". He was in the printing business most of his life. He had 11 children one of whom was John Holbrook Estill editor and proprietor of "The Savannah Morning News"
