I never had the good fortune to meet this great grandfather of mine.

My grandmother Edna May Battersby White, one of beauties in New Haven, was his daughter.

Soon after arriving in America, he married Julia Augur Phelps who came from a strong New England lineage. We do know John was probably born in Liverpool and ended up in Philadelphia where he met Miss Augur.

The two were from very different backgrounds but had a happy life in Branford Ct and raised 5 children: Edna, Marguerite, Howard, Raymond and Gladys.

I can trace three children. Marguerite married Lyman Monore in Branford, Raymond married Gladys Godfrey, and my gramma Edna was in New Haven with her husband Ogden Watson White and family.

The whole Battersby family in Branford was involved in the very earliest telephone service in the USA and are mentioned in its history.

Between 1900 and his death in 1910 John went missing and left his family. Julia carried on by herself. In 1900 and 1910 there were letters from a lady in New York City telling his wife that he was a"hobo" living from time to time in her boarding house.

There is an autopsy on John performed after he was found dying of blood poisoning due to years of alcoholism while living in the Bowery!

My gramma never spoke of him or about him.

Any info would be appreciated-I know he had relatives in Ohio, probably Cleveland.

May he rest in peace.

His life was--and still is--a mystery!
