Bessie was the only child of Nathan and Polly (Dean) Clifford. Following her mother's death on April 14, 1879 when Bessie was 5 days old, Bessie went to live with her maternal Uncle, William Dean whose family raised Bessie until she was 4 years old. At that time her father Nathan Clifford was appointed guardian of his daughter and they lived at 622 - 15th Street in Detroit.
Bessie married on May 8, 1900 to John J. Hahn who worked as a Railway Brakeman. Together they had four children: Bessie 'Irene', Harold, George and Ruth.
Bessie's husband, John Hahn died on July 10, 1913, perhaps from an accident involving a steam engine. Their 4 year old daughter Ruth died on January 20, 1915 after hitting her head during a fall from a play cart. Bessie's oldest child, Irene, died of tuberculosis on January 29, 1918 at the age of 16 years.
Bessie married her second husband, William Kraft (son of Rudolph and Hermine (Wittenberg) Kraft) on July 24, 1916 and became step-mother to Gertrude Kraft. Together William and Bessie had one child: Leo Charles Kraft.
