According to his death certificate his body was removed to Laurel Land for cremation. His father was Garrett Hoogendorn and his mother was Beatrice Mills. He served in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 141st Infantry, 36th Infantry Division from Robstown, Texas during World War II. The unit was sent to Camp Bowie outside Brownwood where he met Vernell M. Chaney of nearby Goldthwaite. They were married January 31, 1942 and had two daughters.
