Hazel Lee (Cornett) BinkleyHazel Lee (Cornett) BinkleyHazel was born to the late John Monroe Cornett and Rosabelle (James) Cornett, number 13 of 15 children in Ash County, NC. She was 88 years old, residing in Townsend, DE, with her daughter Barbara Faulkner when she passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 13.Hazel Binkley was an excellent mother and homemaker, mentoring and mothering several generations of children. She enjoyed gardening, harvesting and canning fruits and vegetables, and preparing meals for her family. She had a passion for creating quilts and quilting, making several for family, friends, and even raffled a few for charity, working with her hands with love until she was unable. She had a competitive nature and avidly expressed this by bowling on several leagues for many years and even was part of the 250 club and enjoyed watching the Phillies. Hazel was active in Avondale Methodist Church earlier in her life and later she was active in Faith Baptist Church, in Wilmington, DE. She was also active in the Rebekah's of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah's organization for many years, holding various positions in the local order. She opened her home to foreign exchange students, her children's friends, and to other family, making them feel welcomed. She had wisdom if one would listen, and she had a quiet strength, dignity, and kindness that permeated what she did. She dedicated herself to emulate the Proverbs 31 woman in any way that she could. Her husband Robert said that Hazel was the best thing that ever happened to him.Hazel is survived by two sisters, Sarah Gouge, age 96, of Jonesboro, TN, and Celia Caudell, age 92, of Oxford, PA; four daughters, Gail Varady (Albert) of Newark, DE, Barbara Faulkner(Jim Faulkner, Deceased) of Townsend, DE, Helen Binkley of Murfreesboro, TN, and Jean Binkley (Trent Higgins)of Wilmington, DE; 11 grandchildren, Kimberly Bright, Dawn Graham, Scott Lowd, Andy Varady, Nicole Griffith, Jenifer Varady, Billy Lowd, Holly Gaskins, April Varady, Robert Lee Binkley, and Jonathan Higgins; 24 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by 4 brothers, 8 sisters, her first husband, Willet Price, second husband, Robert Binkley, daughter Betty Sue Lowd, and grandson Mark Weir.Services will be on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808 where friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Faith Baptist Church, 4210 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
