U.S. Congressman. After attending an academy in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, he moved to Vermont, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1803 and commenced to practice law in Milton, Vermont. He was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1810-14, 16-17, 22, 24-26). In 1831, he was elected a Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-second through the Twenty-fourth Congresses and as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law and was a director of the Lake Champlain Steamboat Company until his death at age 67.
