J.L. Alexander, 81, of Plainview formerly of Portales, NM passed away on July 30, 2014. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday evening from 6 to 7 P.M. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Portales, New Mexico.

J.L. Alexander, 81.

A celebration of the life of J.L. Alexander, 81, of Plainview, TX will be held at 11:00 AM, Tues., Aug. 5, 2014 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, in Portales, with Dr. Tim Marrow, pastor of First Baptist Church, Plainview, officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. All of his fellow National Guardsmen from the Portales Unit will be honorary pallbearers. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion, Post 31 of Portales. Those desiring to make memorial contributions may send them to either the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home, 2200 S. Ave I, Portales, NM 88130 or to the New Mexico Chapter of the Alzheimer's Assoc., 9500 Montgomery Blvd NE, Ste. 121, Albuquerque, NM 87111 or by selecting donations on our website, and pay by credit card.

J.L. Alexander was born on May 7, 1933 in Lamesa, TX to the home of Nellie (Howell) and H.H. Alexander and died July 30, 2014 in Plainview, TX. He and his family moved to Hobbs, NM when he was a boy, and he graduated from Hobbs High School in 1951. J.L. enlisted in the U S Navy prior to graduation, and went to the Naval Training Center in San Diego for basic training. He was assigned to the USS Logan APA 196 Troop Transport based in Long Beach, FL. The Logan traveled to Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, Japan, China and Korea. After completing his tour of duty aboard the Logan, J.L. was sent to Dental Tech School, and was then assigned to Florida, where he served at Jacksonville and Sanford. He was honorably discharged from active duty on June 6, 1955.

J.L. attended Draughn's Business College in Lubbock on the G.I. Bill from 1955 to 1957. He was working in the oil fields and attending Southwest Bible College in Hobbs, when he met Sue Ainsworth at Castle Avenue Baptist Church where he attended. They courted in church, and were married there on February 14, 1957. He moved to Portales in 1963, and joined Batery C, 4th Battalion of the New Mexico National Guard. J.L. was employed by the federal Civil Service as a Senior Trainer for the New Mexico National Guard.

In 1982, eight candidates were admitted to the Sgt. Major Academy at Fort Bliss, TX. J.L. was appointed by Adjutant General Baca to be the first New Mexican to receive that honor. J.L. received a medical discharge in April 1987, while serving as the Command Sgt Major for the New Mexico National Guard Institute in Roswell. During his 27 years of service, J.L. had served in Korea, Cuba and Vietnam.

J.L. was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales. He always enjoyed working outdoors, and for 30 years he kept a large pecan orchard at his home. J.L. was always busy building or constructing something, which he referred to as "piddlin.'" He and his wife moved to Plainview to make their home near family members in August 2011.

They are blessed to have raised Gwenda Deanne, Quinn J. and Alexis Nicole during their 57 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Sue, and his children, and grandchildren; Gwenda Alexander of Plainview, TX; Quinn and Sharon Alexander and their children Alison and Adam of Canyon, TX; Nicole and Dr. Travis King and their children, Brooklyn, Mason and Austin of Plainview, TX; Tira and Kyle Karvas and their children Aiden and Kasen of Lubbock, TX; and a sister, Wanda Dyer of Ackerly, TX; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and six sisters.
