Lucy Carnegie Ferguson, a member of the industrialist Carnegie family who worked most of her life to preserve Cumberland Island, died Monday night after a long illness. She was 89 years old.

Born in New York City, she moved with her parents, Oliver Garrison Ricketson Carnegie [Carnegie?] and Margaret Coleman Carnegie, to Cumberland Island when she was 3. Her family owns 1,300 acres on the island, which Congress declared a national seashore in 1972. She was the owner of Greyfield Inn and the Serendipity Farm, both on Cumberland Island.

The widow of Robert Weeks Ferguson, a former state representative, she is survived by two sons, Robert W. Jr. of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Oliver R., of Bluffton, S.C.; two daughters, Margaret McDowell and Lucy McLaughlan, both of Fernandina Beach; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
