Daughter of Lyle & Jackie (Bixenmann) Weitzel.
From the Grand Island, NE. "Independent Newspaper:"
Amber Weitzel, who was killed in a traffic accident Wednesday, was described as a highly visible student at Northwest High School because of her many activities.
Weitzel graduated from Northwest last May and was a student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The accident occurred on Highway 30 six miles east of Kearney. Weitzel was driving east in a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird when she lost control of the car, the Buffalo County Sheriff's Department said in a press release. Her car collided with a 1999 Plymouth van driven west by Monica Roblyer, 30, of Gibbon. Roblyer was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney and treated for injuries.
Friends from Northwest described her as an outgoing person who loved to dance. Northwest Principal Mike Zulkoski said Weitzel was involved in drama, the A Cappella Choir that performed at Carnegie Hall last year, the Vikettes dance team and the yearbook. She attended all four years of high school at Northwest.
As a result of those activities, Weitzel was often in front of the public and student body at Northwest, he said.
"She was well-known," Zulkoski said. He said the Northwest school community was saddened by Weitzel's death.
"Whenever tragedy strikes, it's a tremendous loss for all of us," Zulkoski said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family." Lucy Johnson, a junior at Northwest, was in Weitzel's advisement group last year.
"She was very outgoing," Johnson said. "She was not afraid to say anything. She brightened up a room when she walked into it. She was so beautiful. Amber was very bouncy and full of cheer."
Noting that Weitzel was a member of the Vikettes, Johnson said, "She loved to dance."
Weitzel's love of dance was mentioned by another friend, Laura Hahn, who also graduated from Northwest last year.
"We were in Vikettes together for three years and were in Sandy Gardner's dance class together for years," Hahn said. "She was one of my really good friends."
Not only did Weitzel like to dance in those settings, but she also liked to go to P J's in Hastings and to Lear Jets in Kearney to dance, Hahn said.
Hahn said she did not know how serious Weitzel was about her plans, but her friend enjoyed dance enough that she "always talked about being on a major dance squad for a big sports team."
"Amber was very outgoing," Hahn said. "She was very energetic. She was really nice to everyone."
Because of Weitzel's death, Zulkoski said, school officials opened a room for students and staff members who might want to gather to talk.
"We'll continue that as long as that is needed," Zulkoski said. Northwest will end classes for the first semester at noon today.
Weitzel was also involved in several organizations at UNK, where she was a member of Alpha Pi sorority and the dance squad.
