Born in Madison County to the late George Nelson Stovall and Fannie S. Stevenson Stovall, Bert worked her entire career as a registered nurse in the Athens area. She served as Director of Nurses at Athens General Hospital and at Athens Heritage Nursing Facility. She was a member of Ila Baptist Church.
Along with her parents, Bert was preceded in death by three husbands: Bernard Whitley, William Barrett, and James Wofford; her sister, Elizabeth "Lib" Chandler; and her brother, Thomas Nelson
