A native of Ohio, he studied law in Cincinnati. In 1840 he became Professor of the Law of Real Property and Mercantile Law in the Law School of Cincinnati, retaining his chair for six years, during a part of which time he served as Judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati. He was appointed by President Hayes in 1879 to the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia and retired in 1892.
