Duke of Modena and Reggio. He died in Treviso and was buried in the Capuchin church there. In 1816 he was transferred to Modena and buried in the Cathedral thereDuke. Ercole Rinaldo d'Este, son of Francesco III d'Este and his wife Charlotte Aglaé d'Orléans, was born at the Ducal Palace of Modena. His father was the Duke of Modena and Reggio. His mother was the granddaughter of King Louis XIV of France and his mistress Madame de Montespan. Ercole was the fourth child of the marriage, and the only son to survive to adulthood. His marriage to Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, the Duchess of Massa, was arranged in 1741. (His bride had previously had a proxy marriage as a child, but had never met her first husband due to his death in 1734.) The marriage produced two children, with only one, a daughter, surviving to adulthood. Ercole succeeded his father as Duke of Modena. In addition to building new roads and bridges, he supported the arts. In 1785, the Duke founded the Atesine Academy of Fine Arts. His wife died in Modena in 1790. Ercole fled to Venice when the French invaded, but was captured and robbed there. He then moved to Treviso, where he died in 1803. The Duke of Modena was interred at the Convent of the Visitation in Venice. At least two of his sisters are buried there as well.
