Mary Alice was the daughter of Clarence and Verna (Hines) Garrison and was one of eight children.

She married Clarence Poindexter Zimmerman in 1954 and they had a son, Steven Allen in 1955. They divorced soon after Steven's birth and she married Ernest Homer Robinson on June 28, 1958.

Mary and Ernest had two daughters, Elizabeth (Kurt) Kurti and Kathleen (Troy) Andrews.
