Henry John Cracknell was born in Chelsea to William Cracknell, a Baker and his second wife Elizabeth (nee Garstone). The family lived on Arthur Street (since renamed Dovehouse Street), opposite the Chelsea Workhouse and close to St. Luke's Church where his two infant siblings amongst other relatives were buried. Although initially recorded as working as a clerk Henry appears to have soon found his trade in carpentry and was employed at saw mills, most likely those near the Thames in Pimlicoor as a cooper as was his elder brother William.

Henry married Sarah Crook on 15 March 1846 and between them they had twelve children (four boys, eight girls including twins), ten surviving into adulthood and two infants having both been buried in 1851 at St. Lukes Churchyard. Sarah's sister Charlotte later married Henry's older brother William after his first wife had died.

After the birth of seventh child James, Henry and Sarah moved the family out of London to the High Road, Ponders End where Henry found employment at the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock as a gun stocker. The family later moved to Warwick Road c.1865, closer to the RSAF. Sarah died in 1875 and Henry lived with his daughters at Hanby Terrace, Ordnance Road most of whom were in service. His sons James and Reuben both joined him as gun stockers and filers at the RSAF and lived locally.

Henry married again on 3 February 1884 having met his wife to be Sarah Bishop, a colleague of his daughter Lydia, both of whom had been working in service at Marsh Street, Walthamstow. Henry and Sarah moved to Waverley Road, now part of Allandale Road, Freezywater, where Henry died aged 77 years.
