BIO: Depending on which record, known as Andrew or Thomas Cummins/Cummings (both surname spellings used, Irish spelling was always WITHOUT the "G", Americanized seems to have morphed to "with" the "G").

Came to America in the 1849/50 timeframe with his wife Julia and first two children (Patrick and Julia, both born in Ireland). Family history states that the family briefly settled in Gary, Indiana in greater Chicago to work in the steel mills there, then back to Cleveland (a likely stop before initially heading to Chicago). There may have been a brief stint in Canada, but we're not sure.

By 1852 the family is in Cleveland, so the Indiana stay was quick. Family history states that Andrew "dragged stone" for St. Johns Cathedral in Cleveland (which we know was completed in 1852), so obviously the family is here by now (and there is an Andrew Cummings listed in the 1852 city directory, too. Two more children (Elizabeth "Lizzie" and my ancestor Catherine "Kate" are born in Cleveland in the late 1850s).

His family lived in the industrial Irish area of the lower Cleveland flats, on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. At the time of his death in April 1866, they lived on Canal Street. He is listed as having died in "an accident", likely working in heavy industry on the river (?).

Gravesite Details

We don't think there is a marker there for Andrew. They would have been rather poor at that time.
