Frank served in the Army as a second lieutenant in Medical Administration, serving in Adak, Alaska and, later, in the Korean Conflict.

On June 15, 1946, he married Helen Lloyd-Jones of Mason City, Iowa. They raised their four children in Mason City and were deeply involved in many civic and business aspects of both Mason City and the state. In 1982 he sold his businesses and retired to Sanibel, Fla., with his wife. There, he continued his love of sailing and was active in the area Habitat for Humanity, the Ding Darling Bird Sanctuary and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation.

In 2007, the couple moved to Hailey, Idaho, to live near their two youngest children.
