Hilary Belloc, Son of Famed Author, Dies

Hilary Belloc, son of the renowned English author Hilaire Belloc, died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack while eating lunch at a San Francisco restaurant. He was 76.

The senior Belloc, poet, novelist and historian, was one of the literary giants who dominated the decades at the turn of the century. He died in 1953. His son, Hilary, was born in Sussex, England.

As a boy, he was privy to the conversations of his father and other literary figures of the time, including H.G. Wells, G.K. Chesterton, and George Bernard Shaw.

Mr. Belloc discontinued his college studies to sail the South Seas. He later returned to school, obtaining a mining engineering degree from McGill University in Quebec, Canada.

In 1934, Mr. Belloc married Frances Gunnison Bartnett, daughter of Walter Bartnett, a lawyer and prominent figure in the railway system in California. Later known as Hope Belloc, she died in 1970.

In the early Thirties, Mr. Belloc was a fisherman in the waters off the Northern California coast. Once he nearly drowned near Eureka when his boat was swamped by a surfacing whale.

He was often accompanied on fishing expeditions by his good friend, John Steinbeck.

During World War II, Mr. Belloc served as a commissioned officer in the Canadian Navy, and was stationed in Newfoundland. After the war, he returned to California, where he began working as an engineer for the state highway department.

Mr. Belloc and his wife, Hope, took up residence on De Silva Island in Marin County. Mrs. Belloc had received the island as a gift from her family soon after marriage. Mr. Belloc, who retired from the highway department in the 1950s, became a naturalized American citizen a few years later.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Walnut Creek; a sister, Eleanor Belloc of England; and a son, Marc John Belloc of Corte Madera, now attending medical school in Rome, Italy. Interment will be tomorrow in Napa. The family prefers donations to the American Heart Association.
