Clara Stokes, 80, died Dec. 14, 1994 at Plains Regional Medical Center in Portales.

Mrs. Stokes was born in Brownwood, Texas on Oct. 23, 1914 to Mary Alice and Jody Harris. Her family moved from Brownwood to Portales when she was a small child. On Sept. 17, 1932 she married John E. Stokes in Clovis. She and her husband made their home in Portales until 1949 when they moved to Cimmarron and worked at Philmont Boy Scout Camp. In 1956 they moved to Amhurst, Texas. After the death of her husband she attended nurses training and worked for many years at the South Plains Hospital in Amhurst, and then later worked as an office nurse for a local doctor. After her retirement, Mrs. Stokes moved back to Portales and has made her home in Golden Acres until her death.

Mrs. Stokes is survived by one son and a daughter-in-law: John and Janice Stokes of Gallup; one daughter and son-in-law: Frances and Larry Williams of Dixon, Mo.; four grandchildren: Shelby and Amy Stokes of Amarillo, Texas, Mike Williams of Dixon, Mo. and Lonnie Kramer of Concordia, Mo.; three brothers: Irby Harris of Tatum, Edwin Harris of Portales and Lowell Harris of Shreveport, La.

She was preceded in death by both parents, a brother, Leslie Harris, and her husband, John F. Stokes in December of 1957.

Services for Mrs. Stokes will be held at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Galen Isaacs will officiate and burial will be in the Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Bryant, Andy Wall, Archie Harris, Jody Harris, John Harris and Eddie Ray Harris. Honorary pallbearers are all her friends.
