George was the grandson of George W. Thompson and Frances (Fanny) W. Brown. He is enumerated with them in 1880 Wake Forest, NC along with his sister Ida S. Thompson.

George graduated from Wake Forest in North Carolina. He continued his studies at the University of Virgina, finishing his education at Yale. George was married to Lida Baldwin first. Lida is the daughter of Osborne Barry Baldwin and Lenora Carothers; granddaughter of James Henderson Carothers, the founder and father of the town of Pacheco and Emily F. Prince. He married Edna Potwin second on 17 Jun 1915 at the home of Mrs. L.M. Lasalle, 1947 Dwight Way, Berkeley, Alameda, CA.

George was the brother of Warren Thompson, of San Francisco at the time of his brother's death and Louise Thompson of South Boston. George had been the principal of Alameda High School in Oakland (retired), which happens to be where Edna Potwin taught English.
