Poet, abolitionist. She also translated German poems into English. Two of her own best known poems are "Rouen, Place de la Pucelle" and "An Opium Fantasy." She was involved with the temperance movement. The daughter of Abijah and Ann Maria Howard White, she married the poet James Russell Lowell in 1844. They had four children, only one of whom survived to adulthood.
