Mrs. WILLIAM T. HAMILTON, Jr., a Hagerstown leader in museum and garden care work, died suddenly Monday evening at Delray Beach, Fl., where she had been spending the holiday with her son-in-law, Eli H. Brown, 3d, of Louisville, Ky., and grandchildren.

Mrs. Hamilton, who would have observed her 90th birthday on Jan. 8, reportedly had been in good health and had attended an art auction with her son-in-law earlier in the day. Her interest in art had been a lifetime dedication, one that was utilized for the benefit of this community in her long identification with the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. She had served for more than a quarter of a century as president of the Museum's board of trustees.

Mrs. Hamilton's identification with the museum had begun three years prior to its opening in 1931, when she first conferred in NY City with William H. Singer, Jr. and his wife, the former Anna Brugh of this county, on their plan for building a museum here.

As a close friend of Mrs. Singer, Mrs. Hamilton served as her representative in choosing a site, an architect and making all other decisions on implementation of the Singer gift to this community.

Mrs. Hamilton's leadership of the Museums's board, which at the time of her death she still served as president emeritus, helped the fledgling institution to achieve a stature far surpassing its physical size. She was the vital force in planning the growth of its permanent collection and in expanding its role as an educational force in the community.

A lifetime president of the Hagerstown Garden Club, Mrs. Hamilton initiated the club's project of landscaping the museum's grounds, utilizing on the services of noted landscape architect. The five year project, completed in 1941, won a national award for "outstanding planting in a civic project" from the National Council of State Garden Clubs. She was assistant treasurer of the Nature Council of Garden Clubs.

Mrs. Hamilton was president of the Hagerstown Garden Club for eight years and was the first woman outside of Baltimore to serve as president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, from 1946 through 1949. She had been chairman of the Blue Star Memorial Highway Program since its inception in 1953 and in October of 1970, served as chairman of the Baumiller Rest Area Dedication.

Active in many organizations, Mrs. Hamilton was keenly interested in the Maryland Pilgrimage and the Maryland Citizens Committee for Conservation. She was a director of the Society for the Preservation of Maryland Antiquities, and a charter member and longtime director of the local Women's Club. She also was a charter member of Hagerstown-Wesel Town Affiliation Committee, which she served as co-chairman. She was a former president and only honorary member currently of the Hagerstown Zonta Club.

Long recognized as the social matriarch of this community, she came to Hagerstown as a girl of 14 from her native Virginia. The daughter of the late J.V. Jamison, Sr., founder of the Jamison Door Co., she married William T. Hamilton, Jr., son and namesake of the former Maryland governor.

She survived her husband, both of their daughters, Mavin (Mrs. Eli H. Brown, 3d) and Julia (Mrs. James Spencer Lee). She is survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Rouzer Funeral Home with services at St. John's Episcopal Church.
