Mr. Darrell D. Shuler, 78, of Eudora, who was born November 27, 1925 in Humble, Texas, died Sunday, February 22, 2004, at his residence on the levee outside Eudora. He was a graduate of Conroe High School and attended college in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was in active overseas duty in the United States Navy in World War II. He moved to Eudora from Texas in the late forties and was a rancher. He was retired from the Government Veterinarian Service and was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church. He was a well known horseman, particularly in the cutting horse circuits, winning many honors and shows on his favorite horse, Royal Fanny, including honors as the Regional Cutting Horse of Southeastern United States. He won many shows in Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas during his career.


He is survived by his wife, Betty Botsford Gay Shuler of Eudora; a son, Bill Shuler and wife Tabby of Richmond, TX; a stepdaughter, Beverly Stephenson; a stepson, Jake Gay and wife Denise both of Portland; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores Shuler Darby and his father, Claude Shuler.

Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, in the Portland United Methodist Church in Portland with the Rev. Ron Feeser officiating. Burial was to follow services at the Portland Cemetery under the direction of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg. Pallbearers were to be John Gates, Alvin Meyer Jr., Charles Pete Poole, David Vaughn, Bill Norsworthy, Benton Newcome and Fletcher and Bill Lassiter. Honorary pallbearers were to be Dr. J.D. Bilberry, Bill Roberts, Allen Hillman, Mack Ball Sr. and George Pugh. Memorials may be made to the Portland United Methodist Church, PO Box 400, Portland, Arkansas 71663 or the Hospice Home Care, 455 West Gaines, Monticello, AR 71655.
