George Holshouser served in Co. H 8th Iowa. Infantry under Captain Walden. While in the service, he was captured by the Confederates and taken to Anderson prison where he served 8 months and 11 days. While there he suffered small pox, measles, and mumps and these illness and the conditions that he lived under caused him to lose so much weight that when he was released, he only weighed 48 lbs. He still served with is company until the end of the war.

While on furlough he married, but his wife lived but a short time. On January 11, 1880 he married Catherine Stewart at Seymore and they moved to Centerville. His daughter, Mrs. Thomas Hogan, of Belvidere, Kansas and his wife survived him. his other daughter Katie died at eleven years of age.

Bertha Hogan, a long time resident of Centerville passed away Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the St. Joseph Hospital following several months' illness. She was born in Numa and was the daughter of George and Catherine Stewart Holshouser. She was married to Thomas N. Hogan Dec. 6, 1913.

She was preceded in death by her husband in April 1927, her parents and a sister. She is survived by a sister in law and nephew, Angens N. and Mathew J. Hogan of Hartford Conn.

For many years she was employed as a clerk at the Continental Hotel, and she was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and the B.P.W. Club.

Rosary services were held Sunday from the Johnson Funeral Home after which the body was shipped to Hartford, Conn.
