Gates of Mercy Cemetery, established in 1828, was the first Jewish cemetery in New Orleans. Located at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Saratoga Street, it fell into disrepair in the mid-twentieth century and was finally demolished in 1957. Prior to demolition the remains of those interred there were removed and re-interred at Hebrew Rest Cemetery no. 1 (2100 Pelopidas). A large memorial stone placed at Hebrew Rest bears the names of those believed to have re-interred there, but the list of names is incomplete.
