"Returning from one of his trips he found Roah very ill with typhoid fever. Little Lizzie was taken sick and died, and about two months later, in January, 1866, Roah followed her. This tragedy wrecked the happy prospects of the new life on the Missouri farm. With Eddie, Mr. Adams returned sadly to Hambden, completely broken and never wanting to see Missouri again."

After her mother's death, Roah's father married his sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucena M. (Brown) Alderman.
