Edward Matthew Curran was born in Bangor,Penobscot County,Maine the son of Michael Joseph Curran & Mary Agnes Callinan. He married first on June 6th 1934 to Katherine Cecilia Hand in Washington, D.C. Edward served as a Judge in District of Columbia Police Court from 1936 to 1940, and then served as the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1940 to 1946.On October 16, 1946,President Harry S. Truman appointed him to a seat on the United States District Court that had been vacated by Daniel W. O'Donoghue. Formally nominated on January 8, 1947, Edward M Curran was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 3, 1947, and received his commission on February 5, 1947.Judge Curran presided over the trial of Mildred Gillars (aka Axis Sally) for treason in 1949. His wife Katherine passed away on 23 March 1960 in Washington DC and he later remarried on December 30,1963 to Margaret Virginia Carr.Judge Curran served as chief judge from 1966 to 1971, where he assumed senior status on April 2, 1971. Judge Curran served as a Senior United States federal judge until his death on May 10,1903. He was survived by his beloved wife Margaret Virginia Carr Curran as well as his children Eileen Marie Curran Monahan,Mary Catherine Curran,Ann Elizabeth Curran Schmidtlein and Edward Matthew Curran Jr. as well as six grandchildren. Friends made call on Tuesday January 12th at Joseph Gawlers Sons at 5130 Wisconsin Ave. On Wednesday January the 13th Mass of Christian burial was offered at Blessed Sacrament with Interment at Mount Olive Cemetery.
