John Marmaduke STROTHER was born in 1893 at the family estate of his mother, Emily Maud, The Manor House Hyam Park, Northamptonshire.

The family moved back to Killinghall, Ripley Parish, West Riding of Yorkshire, where his solicitor father Thomas William was JP for the West Riding and Chairman of the newly formed Parish Council.

When older he played Rugby for Harrogate Old Boys
Known as 'Duke' he joined the army at the start of the war along with his brother Lance.

His MC was presented at Buckingham Palace for actions at Ancre Nov 1916
His name is on the Killinghall War Memorial and in the Church of St Thomas where his parents and other family members are buried.

The Strother family go back to 1700 in Killinghall and earlier in Ripon where his ancestor John was Mayor in 1682 when he signed a petition to Charles II and again in 1687-8.

It is claimed the family origins were from Northumberland and after one William emigrated to America they provided the mother, Sarah Dabney Strother, of President Zacary Taylor
