U.S. Continental Congressman. With the advent of the American Revolution, he signed the articles of association in 1775, agreeing to avoid British imports, even though this hurt his own business. He was a delegate to the Second, Third and Fourth Provincial Congresses of New York, (1775-77) and a member of the New York State constitutional convention in 1777. He also was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1777-85) and appointed a member of the last U.S. Continental Congress in 1789. He was later a member of the New York State Senate, (1791-94, 98, 1802), surrogate of New York County, (1787-1801) and collector of the Port of New York, (1801-20). After leaving politics, he died in retirement at age 84.
