U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Columbia College in 1812, entered the U.S. Navy, was commissioned a Midshipman and served in the War of 1812. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1818 and commenced to practice law in Goshen, New York. He was district attorney of Orange County, (1823-26), a member of the New York State Assembly, (1825-26, 28) and district attorney of the New York City, (1829-35). In 1837, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. After leaving Congress, he was U.S. District Attorney of New York, (1841-45) and New York State Attorney General, (1853-55).
