John the son of Edward W. Parton who pre-deceased him and Margie C. Long, and dear brother of Anthony S. Parton of Sheridan Wyoming, loving father of Tammy L. Parton in the care of Dolores Buskirk of Hysham Montana enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 16 1969 at AFEES Phoenix AZ. He arrived in Vietnam on May 18 1972 where he was assigned to and served with Sub Unit 1, 1st ANGLICO, FMFPac.

On July 1, Cpl Parton, a member of a spotter team for supporting naval gunfire, was wounded by enemy rifle fire during contact with enemy forces. Evacuated to the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang he succumbed to the injuries he had sustained.
