Born at Inverhaggernie farm, near Crianlarich, Perthshire; son of James McKinlay, tacksman of Inverhaggernie, and his wife Elleonora Cameron. Arrived at York Factory (principal Hudson's Bay Company post, in present-day Manitoba, Canada) in 1831 in company with his sister, Ellen McMillan (nee McKinlay) and her infant daughter who were coming to join Ellen's husband, HBCo Chief Factor James McMillan, in the Red River settlement (modern Winnipeg, Manitoba). After a short interval in the "counting house" at YF, Archibald was assigned to HBCo service in western North America (modern British Columbia, Washington state, and Oregon). Married Sarah Julia Ogden, daughter of Peter Skene Ogden, at Fort Vancouver, Oregon territory in 1840. Rose to the rank of Chief Trader in the HBCo before leaving the company's service in Oregon in 1851, after which he devoted himself to a retail business and to farming. After disastrous flooding in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, "Archie" and Julia and their extended family relocated to Lac la Hache, British Columbia in 1862. In about 1890, the elderly McKinlays relocated to Savona, BC to live with their daughter Sarah Ferguson. Archibald died in Savona in 1891 and was interred in the local cemetery.
