Capt. Stone was killed on the first day of the famous battle of IWO JIMA (part of the Japanese-controlled Volcano Islands in the South Pacific). The five-week battle saw some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting in the Pacific Theater of WWII.
From his niece Barbara Keeling: "My Uncle Hicks L. Stone is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, HI, Section E Site 343. The headstone, at the Wheelock Cemetery in McCurtain County, Oklahoma, between his parents, Baughn & Luna Stone, is in memory of him."
