Samuel L Riely worked in his father's drugstore as a young man. Apparently he was involved only in sales; he was working at the store as late as 1920, after the death of his father. Samuel and his brother Stoy built a hotel at Wyandotte Cave, and planned to build the facility as a major resort. The hotel burned, and Stoy moved on. By 1930 Samuel was living at the resort with two of his employees; the residence of his wife Hilda is not known. He continued to attempt to develop a resort; in 1940 he and Hilda were both managing the hotel and operating the caves. At the time of his draft registration in 1942, Samuel listed himself as the operator of the caves.
