My beautiful, gentle giant rock of a big brother passed peacefully during the night,

We shared a very special bond, which began, as he told me, the first time he saw me as a baby.

Neil was the middle of three sons, born to our parents in 1932, 1934, 1936. All were small boys when our father sailed for Army service in Singapore in 1941.

When he was about 14 months of age, he underwent an operation for a growth on his brain. This was an extraordinary operation to perform on a child back in those days. His life of course was saved, though he was left with a speech impediment that worsened the older he became.

He was an exceptional brother to me. How many other fourteen year old boys would take their baby sisters out for the day, or spend hours on week-end doubling her about on his bike.

When he was about 16 he began his apprenticeship as an electroplater, which was a very dirty occupation with black dust almost continuously in the air, and though he cleaned up as best he could before leaving work, he was always greated at the front door with the welcome "He's home, he's home. My blackey is home at last."

Both of our parents worked, and as I stated school, either he or the younger of my brothers would be home when I arrived home from school.

It was he, who decided that I was too nervous and strung up the week before I was to sit for a big school exam, so I was kept home from school and taken out every day to get my mind off things.

It was he, who informed my mother that I needed upper underwear, and when I should be allowed to wear a slight high heeled shoe. He was also the one to make me return a two piece bathing suit, I had purchased, as he "wan't having his little sister parading about it that thing."

He was the black sheep of the three boys, riding a motor bike, drinking heavily, smoking and fighting as he got older, but I knew he was always there for his little "sweetheart."

As I got older, he, together with my parents had to approve of any boys I wanted to go out with. Luckily, he heartily approved of the man I finally married and they became good mates.

Among the jobs he had after he left the electroplating business, he was a meat worker, a wharfie and a painter & docker.

He met a lady with three young children, who had been seperated from her husband for a number of years. He went to see the husband, who would not agree to a divorce, but gave his blessing to them living together.

He adored those three children, and they in turn adored him, even informing him one day that they were adopting his as their father.

In time he got to know his first son, and though it was not a strong bond, they established a friendsly cordial relationship.

Another son was born, and everybody got on well together. So much so that at his 80th birthday, he had 5 grand-sons and two grand-daughters in attendance.

Approximately 8 weeks prior to his 80th birthday, he was operated on for a knee replacement, after which he suffered two heart attacks while still in hospital.

He was transferred to the top heart hospital in Brisbane, where it was determined he had three blocked arteries and a leaky valve.

Admitted to hospital two days after his 80th birthday, he had his heart operation, which was deemed a success, though he did not seem to get the sparkle back in his eyes.

He was released from hospital approximately two weeks ago, and spent nearly all that time staying with a friend. He went back home on Sunday night, with his son and two grand-children visiting him on the Monday, during which time he said he was feeling really good,

On his way to pick his father up for an outing this morning, his son could not get him on the mobile but thought he must be at the convenience.

He let himself into the unit, and walked into the bedroom, where he found his dad, peacefully lying in bed,, with the bedding pulled up to his chest.

My phone calls to him always ended with - "Goodbye big brother, take care, I love you."
To which he would reply, "I love you too. Take care of yourself little sweetheart."

'GOODBYE BIG BROTHER - REST IN PEACE -I LOVE YOU."

I thought of you today, but that is nothing new,
I thought of you yesterday and days before that too,
I think of you in silence, and I often speak your name,
All I have are memories and your picture in a frame.
Your memory is a keepsake from which I'll never part,
God has you in His keeping......I have you in my heart.
