Jurist. Grandson of Augustus C. Hand (1803-1878); son of Samuel Hand (1833-1886) and Lydia Coit Learned Hand. Went by the name of Learned Hand. Served on the District Court of New York from 1909 to 1924, and on the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1924 to 1951 as Chief Judge. Often mentioned as a possible Supreme Court justice but never nominated. Hand believed in a limited role for judges and was a frequent critic of the United States Supreme Court "judical activism." Publications included: Liberty (1941); Spirit of Liberty (1952); Bill of Rights (1958); Art and Craft of Judging: The Decisions of Judge Learned Hand-Hershel Shanks, editor); and, Learned Hand on Patent Law (1983, edited by Paul H. Blaustein).
