Fred was born in Durand to John and Lula Dowell on February 12, 1926. He attended Durand schools. He joined the Navy and proudly served his country on an amphibian ship in the south pacific. After the war ended, he returned to Durand and married his high school sweetheart, Marge Kennedy where they raised 3 children together. They were very proud to have 2 sons who also served their country in Vietnam. Marge preceded him in death in 1994.
In 1949 Fred was hired by the Grand Trunk Railroad where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1987. He was a life member of the Reed Raymond V.F.W. Post in Durand. Fred and Marge loved to travel. He had been in all 50 states and she had been to 49. Other hobbies included reading, going to the casinos and playing his lucky pull tabs.
Fred is survived by his son, Thomas of Royal Oak; daughter, Janet (Jack) VanRiper of Durand; granddaughters, Janie (Jason) Davies of Byron and Tracy (Jeff) Lince of FL.; 6 great grandchildren; 2 step-great grandchildren; sisters, Peaches Middleton of Alma and Janice Hoshell of Durand and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marge; son, Timothy; brother, Wayne; sister, Shirley Kennedy; and brother-in-laws, Richard Kennedy and Robert Middleton.
