Dansville - Shirley L. Allen, 77, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.

Shirley was born Oct. 6, 1933, in Dansville, a daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Hathaway) Holbrook. She was a graduate of Dansville High School and a 1972 graduate of St. James School of Nursing. She married Gerald E. Allen on Flag Day, June 14, 1952; he predeceased her on Nov. 11, 2005. In her younger years Shirley worked at the Blum Shoe Factory in Dansville for eight years. After which she started her career in nursing as an aide at the Craig Developmental Center in Sonyea. After receiving her nursing degree, Shirley continued to grow in experience and responsibility at Craig Developmental Center. She held many titles while employed there, starting as an aide then eventually on to nursing administrator and program administrator; she retired after 29 years of dedicated service. After Craig Developmental Center; Shirley worked briefly part-time at the Livingston County Skilled Nursing Facility in Mt. Morris. In 1979, she was selected The Voice of Hope by the Livingston County Cancer Society.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by two brothers, Gerald Holbrook and John Holbrook and a sister, Doris Shermon.

Shirley was a past member of the American Red Cross, the CSEA, the PEF and she loved attending the monthly gathering of the DHS Class of 1951.

Shirley enjoyed traveling, crocheting, bird watching, nature and horticulture, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Donald Allen, Janet (Joseph) Mignemi and Barbara Allen (Brian Schirmer); grandchildren, Daniel Canfield (fiancee Rebecca Stever), Army Specialist Jerad (Amada) Canfield and Heather Allen; great-grand-daughters, Keira and Kaelyn Canfield; two sisters, Marie J. Street and Rose M. Long; many nieces, nephews, cousins; her dear special family William and Caroleen Graves and David Canfield.

Friends called Wednesday at the Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St., Dansville, where funeral services will be held 11 am, Thursday. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville.
