Levi S. Mason , age 84, of 1309 22nd St., Two Rivers, died Friday morning, March 5, 1999 at Two Rivers Community Hospital.

Funeral Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, 1999, at Klein & Stangel Funeral Home, Two Rivers. The Rev. Roberta Thompson officiated at the service, burial followed at Knollwood Memorial Park, town of Kossuth.

Levi was born February 19, 1915, in Smith Field, Illinois, son of the late Robert and Sadie Bell Kimes Mason. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. On June 22, 1977, he married Evelyn Jacquette Lesperance in Manitowoc. Levi was an active volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Mason, Two Rivers, one son, James Mason, Pardeeville, three daughters and one son-in-law, Karen and Michael Holverson, Baraboo, Jud Mason and Janice Mason, both of Baraboo, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two stepsons and step daughters-in-law, Harold and Beverly Lesperance, Two Rivers, Richard and Carlotte Lesperance, Boston, one step daughter and step son-in-law, Elizabeth and Hugh Cherry, Illinois, nine step grandchildren, ten step great grandchildren, three sisters, Ruth Christ, Mabel Sullivan, and Lavina Hopilds, all of Illinois, a sister-in-law, Marge Sorenson, Two Rivers, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Russell and one sister, Nettie Jane.

Born in Smithfield, IL on Feb. 19, 1915 to Robert James Mason and Sadie Bell Kimes Mason.

Enlisted in the Army on Mar. 12, 1941 in Peoria, IL. Sent to Camp McCoy, WI where he met Ruby C. Loomis who was from Baraboo, WI. They married on Aug. 16, 1943.

He was sent off to England, Wales, and then to Normandy. As a Rifleman, he fought with the 2nd Division, 9th infantry, 3rd Platoon. He was captured on Oct. 3, 1944 along the Sigfried Line and taken to POW Camp Katrine at Limberg, Germany. He was held 216 days until freed by a Russian woman soldier in March, 1944.

After returning home, he became the father to 3 daughters (Karen, Judy, Janice) and 1 son, (James).

He was killed Friday, March 5, 1999, at the age of 84 in a car accident in Two Rivers, WI.

Levi was captured Oct.3,1944. and released March 1945.
