Florence L. Bailey, 76, Rapid City, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at Westhills Health Care Center, from complications of bone cancer.

Florence was born at home on July 17, 1929, to William (Bill) and Florence (Curly) Bailey of Fairpoint. She grew up on her parents’ ranch and attended rural grade school in Fairpoint, then later graduated from New Underwood High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado State College and her Master of Science in Education degree from Black Hills State University in Spearfish.

Florence was a teacher for 35 years. She taught in Hulett and Upton, Wyo.; Great Falls, Mont.; and the Rapid City school system for 26 years, 21 of which were spent teaching kindergarten at Grandview Elementary. She loved teaching and working with children. In May 1992, the year of her retirement, Florence received a Good Apple Award from the Rapid City school district and a Distinguished Service Award from the Kiwanis Club.

She was a member of South Canyon Baptist Church, where she enjoyed serving her Lord and actively participated in Awana, teaching children’s classes, working in the Women’s missions Ministry, and many other church activities.

Florence is survived by her sister, Lucile Bailey; her niece and husband, Linda and Dennis Graybill; their children, Laura, Scott and Michael; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Mildred Tillinghast.

Visitation was at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006 from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday, one hour prior to services.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 at South Canyon Baptist Church, 3333 West Chicago St., with pastors Richard Wells and Paul Lloyd officiating. There will be a brief luncheon at the church after the services, followed by burial at the Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to South Danyon Baptist Church and Hospice of the Hills.
