Joseph E. Portzen, age 86, of Portage, died on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Divine Savior Extended Care in Portage. He was born in Portage on Oct. 2, 1920, the son of Michael and Cristina (Donar) Portzen. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. On July 6, 1950, he was united in marriage with Dorthy Lowe. Dorthy preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1985. He had been a salesman with Becker Meat of Milwaukee for many years, and then owned and operated Chick-A-Rib in Manitowoc for 18 years. Joseph was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the board of elders at First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc. He enjoyed having coffee and talking politics with friends. Survivors include his children: Michael (Brenda) Portzen of Valencia, Calif.; Christine (David) Metzler of Onalaska; Brian (Lisa) Portzen of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren: Christo and Justin Portzen; Alex, Tim and Sam Metzler; and Benjamin Portzen; a very dear sister-in-law: Bea Portzen of Portage; and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at Portage Presbyterian Church in Portage. The Rev. David Hankins will officiate with burial to follow at Knollwood Memorial Park in Manitowoc. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Port-Axtell Community Funeral Home of Portage is assisting the family.
