Clay was the son of John Christopher and Dorcus Tompkins Bruning. He married Grace E. Gilbert on 8 December 1903 in Hancock County, and they had Juanita, John, Josephine, Jane, and Billie. Clay was a field superintendent for the Toledo Sugar Company. He spent some time in Oklahoma. Clay was of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair. Following Grace's death in 1938, Clay married Jessie Mossoney on 31 July 1941 in Paulding County, Ohio.
