Sister Mary Irene Abeln, 90, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died August 9, 2014 at Avera Mother Joseph Manor, Aberdeen, SD.

The funeral Mass for Sister Mary Irene will be Wednesday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, SD. A Scriptural Wake service will be Tuesday, August 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

Reverend Michael Kelly will be celebrant and homilist at the funeral liturgy. Reverend David Janes will assist.

Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Arrangements by Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main Street.

Beulah Irene was born March 24, 1924 to Irene Ella (Murray) and Marcus Joseph Abeln, in Mitchell, SD. She attended public grade school in Mitchell and in 1943 graduated from Notre Dame High School, Mitchell, SD.

Buelah Irene (Sister Mary Irene) entered Presentation Convent January 6, 1947 and made her first profession of vows on August 10, 1949. She studied at Presentation College, attended Presentation School of Nursing and received certification in Nursing Home Administration in1969. In 1978 she was certified as a Chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. Sister Mary Irene ministered in the four original hospitals sponsored by the Presentation Sisters: McKennan in Sioux Falls, Queen of Peace, Mitchell, St. Luke's, Aberdeen, and Holy Rosary Hospital, Miles City, MT. She was Administrator at Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen from 1972 to 1976 and spent some time as nurse at Presentation Children's Home in Sioux Falls. More recently she worked as a volunteer in the Mitchell Hospice program and did home and parish visiting. Sister retired to the convent in Aberdeen in 2005 and has resided at Mother Joseph Manor since January 2014.

Sister Mary Irene is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters, one brother, Clarence Abeln, Hot Springs, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Irene Ella and Marcus Abeln, two sisters, Rosella Abeln, Maxine Abeln Hagebusch and three brothers, Delmar, Bernard and Harold Abeln.

Nephews of Sister Mary Irene will serve as active pall bearers.
