Capt. SILAS O. NUNN, III "Si" USN (Ret)

Si Nunn passed away on July 24, 2014 after a brief fight against the complications of pulmonary diseases. He left this life with his wife and children by his side.
Si was born July 7, 1935, the only child of Silas Jr., and Cate Gardner Nunn of Warrenton, NC.
He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1959 where he was a member of the golf team. While on active duty he earned an MS in Oceanography and had command of two combatant ships, the escort destroyer USS Dealey and the guided missile destroyer USS Coontz. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his dedicated service during this period. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1985, Si worked for Raytheon and Textron, and was primarily involved as a vice president of the Shipbuilders Council of America, the trade association of shipbuilders and marine manufacturers. He retired for the second time in 2001.

He was a longtime member of the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA, and always enjoyed golf with his friends. Si was a 19-year friend of Bill and Dr. Bob. He is survived by his cherished wife of ten years, Donna, and his loving children: daughter Catherine (Schupp), sons Hugh and John, and six grandchildren. A reception was held on August 7 to celebrate his life. He will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in his memory to Capital Caring Hospice http://www.capitalcaring.org/ or The Men's Home http://www.themenshome.org/.
