EDITH COLLEEN (MAGEE) ROMBOUGH June 26, 1931 - November 23, 2009 On November 23 Edith passed away at St. Boniface General Hospital with her family at her side. She was predeceased by her loving husband Ken in 1997. She leaves to mourn her son Brent (Vicky) and their children Jared and Travis, son Garth (Julie) and their son Declan, and daughter Lynn (Mike) Evans, and her brother Ernie (Marion) Magee, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law from Ken's side of the family and many nieces and nephews. Edith was born in Winnipeg on June 26, 1931 and had a very happy childhood with her parents John (Jack) and Annie and older brother Ernie. She attended St. John's High School for Grades 10 and 11 and graduated from Grade 12 from United College (now the University of Winnipeg). She went on to take nursing at Grace General Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1954. After graduation she worked with the Victorian Order of Nurses. She met Ken in June 1954. He fell in love with her while she was tending to his cousin at the hospital. They were married on August 20, 1955. Ken had a large family and they all became a big part of Edith's life, not only as family, but as good friends. Edith and Ken lived on Slater Avenue where Brent and Garth were born, and moved to Amarynth Crescent in 1964 where Lynn was born. She stayed home to raise her children and provide a happy and loving home for her family. Edith taught, by example, the importance of fairness, patience, generosity, faith, and forgiveness. When her children were old enough, Edith joined the staff at Sears Polo Park, where she happily served customers in the Children's Department for many years. She was an active member of St. David's and later St. James Presbyterian Churches, and was involved in the Women's Guild. She was a kind, caring and compassionate person, and was very dedicated to her mother and Aunt Sarah, and as they grew older and needed more help, she visited them daily and helped in any way she could. When she and Ken moved to their condominium, they met and enjoyed many new friends. For the past few years, she truly enjoyed her lunches with her Wednesday Ladies. In particular, Lois was a dear friend and a special help to her. Her laugh is something that all who knew her will remember. She had a wonderful sense of humour, and a keen wit. She was interested in current affairs and enjoyed discussions with family and friends. She loved to play cards with her friends, do crossword puzzles, and she loved to read. When she began to lose her sight, she didn't despair, but made the most of whatever vision was left to her, never lost her optimism and was thankful to the people at CNIB for all the help they gave her. She enjoyed the family cottage at Brereton Lake from early in her childhood, when the trip by train from Winnipeg was part of the holiday. As the family grew, summers at the lake were a special part of the year for them all. For the past few years Lynn and Mike made the trip with her so she could enjoy peaceful weekends surrounded by nature and good memories. These weekends were special to Edith because it gave her a chance to spend time with the daughter she loved so dearly. She was very close to her grandchildren Jared and Travis and spent as much time as she could with them. She attended many concerts, soccer and baseball games and truly enjoyed every event. She had very much looked forward to meeting her newest grandson Declan, and had been delighted to hear him talk over the phone. Her love of her children and their families was evident to all who knew her. She enjoyed outings and visiting with Brent and Vicky and their boys, Lynn and Mike, and Garth and Julie whenever they were in from Toronto. Her happiest times were when she was together with her family. Christmas dinners were an event, and her Yorkshire Pudding, stuffing and desserts were legendary. Desserts as such meant that there was only a selection of six different desserts, plus pie! She and Ken opened their home and their hearts to their extended families and made everyone welcome with their kindness and hospitality. She was also a special Aunty Edith to Jared and Travis' cousins, and the Lotecki and Ronson families. She shared in all of their special events and they all loved her very much. The family is grateful to the staff in the CICU and Pastoral Care at St. Boniface General Hospital for the kind and caring attention they gave to Edith. Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2009 in St. James Presbyterian Church, 1476 Portage Ave. with the Rev. Allan Farris officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends and relatives may make donations in Edith's memory to the CNIB or a charity of their choice. If I could paint with a magic brush a picture that would trace the sweetest thing on earth to me, t'would be my mother's face THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 669 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0X4 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsonfuneralchapel.com
