Roy R. Adams, 89
DENTON, Md. - Roy R. Adams of Denton passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in the Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was 89.
Born near Bridgeville, Del., on March 22, 1918, Mr. Adams was the son of the late Orrie and Minnie (Collison) Adams.
He owned the Adams Feed Co., and the Adams and Wright Hardware, both in Denton, as well as the Adams Oceanfront Motel in Dewey Beach, Del. He co-owned the Redwood Lodge and Southwinds Motel in Dewey Beach in the 1960s. He also owned a beef cattle farm in Starr and a grain farm in Goldsboro.
About 40 years ago, as the two Methodist churches in Denton combined to build a new church, Mr. Adams converted the Grace Methodist Church into apartments that he had owned and managed until the present.
He was active in the Lions Club, the Masons, the Eastern Shore and State Shrine and was a life member of the Denton Volunteer Fire Co. He was highly regarded as a civic and community leader, and a mentor to many.
Mr. Adams had a great love for his cottage (camp) on a pond in the Maine woods and spent much time there every year. The Maine locals considered him one of them, as he joined them in hunting, boating and snowmobiling.
For the past five years, he co-owned standardbred horses with Kenny Wood, and loved going to the harness races at Dover, Del., and Harrington, Del., and was often seen at "the track."
In addition to his parents, Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; a son, Roger Adams; a granddaughter, Joanna Plummer; a brother Maurice Adams; and a sister, Jessie (Adams) Williamson.
He is survived by two daughters, Ruby Adams of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Jane A. Plummer of Hagerstown; one brother, Lester Adams of Bridgeville; two granddaughters, Jenny L. Plummer-Welker of Bowie, and Jackie D. Plummer Sprow of Genessee, Pa.; one step-grandson, Reilly Gordon of McLean, Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Ellie, Ezra and Josey, all of Genessee.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Moore Funeral Home, 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends and family may call from 6 to 8 this evening. There will be a Masonic service at 7:30 this evening. Interment will be in Denton Cemetery.
Instead of flowers, it was Mr. Adams" request that his family and friends take their loved ones out to dinner.
