Marvin was born at home, on Main Street, Battle Creek, Michigan. He was born second out of twin boys. He served in World War II as a lab technician in Great Britain and worked at Fort Custer Station Hospital. He helped his father at the shoe repair shop. He married Valdean L. Ward on April 10, 1946 and they had 2 children. His wife and son worked at Harper Creek Schools as custodians and his daughter-in-law was a cook for Harper Creek Schools.
